Sell Surplus Electrical Wire

Surplus wire is the most common leftover on any electrical job and the one most often handled badly. A job is overbought by fifteen percent because nobody wants to run short. The takeoff changes mid-project and four thousand feet of the wrong size stays on the reel. A conduit run gets value-engineered out after the material is already on site. In every case the contractor ends up with reels in the back of a yard, and the default answer becomes a scrap dumpster, which pays copper weight for material that is functionally new.

That gap between scrap weight and resale value is the whole reason to make a phone call first. Full reels of common building wire in current sizes have a real secondary market, because the next contractor needs 500 MCM this week and the supply house is quoting eight weeks. We price against that demand, not against the metal, and the difference on a single pallet is frequently several thousand dollars.

The practical first step is a photograph. Send us a shot of the reel tags and one wide picture of the pile, and you will usually have a firm number the same day. If the tags are gone, photograph the print legend on the insulation itself; the size, the type designation and the voltage rating are printed every couple of feet along the jacket.

What you should not do first

• Do not call a scrap yard before you know the resale value. Scrap is a floor, not a price.
• Do not strip the insulation to get at the copper. Stripping destroys the resale premium and leaves you with bare metal weight.
• Do not cut long lengths down into short pieces to make them easier to move. Continuous length is most of what you are selling.
• Do not throw away the reel tags or the mill labels. They are the documentation that separates resale-grade wire from scrap.
• Do not leave copper reels sitting uncovered outdoors for another season. Water wicking into the conductor is the one condition problem that genuinely lowers value.

What happens after you accept

We confirm the pickup window against your schedule, send our own truck and crew, and pay you before anything moves. You do not need to sort by size, weigh anything, wrap the reels or stage them at a dock. If the material is behind a locked gate or up on a job site with limited access, tell us and we will bring the right equipment rather than asking you to move it for us.

Loose coils, damaged reels and mixed pallets are normal and we plan for them. Our crew wraps and loads to keep long lengths continuous, because continuous length is most of what we are paying you for.
