Copper vs Aluminum Conductor Value

The value gap and why it exists

Copper carries a substantially higher price per pound than aluminum, both as metal and as finished wire. It conducts better for a given cross-section, so copper wire is smaller and lighter for the same ampacity, and it is the default in most commercial branch-circuit and feeder work. That combined demand keeps copper at the top of the surplus market.

The gap is wide enough that identifying which metal you have is the first question worth answering. The reel tag will say, and if the tag is gone the conductor colour at a cut end is unmistakable.

Where aluminum has a real market

Aluminum dominates in large feeders, service entrance conductors, and utility distribution. URD, triplex, quadruplex and bare overhead conductor are aluminum by convention, and surplus in those constructions sells consistently to utility contractors and co-ops who need material faster than a mill can supply it.

Large aluminum feeder reels are routinely worth several times their scrap weight for exactly the same reason as copper: the lead time on new material is the buyer's problem, not the metal price.

Mixed loads

Most real yards contain both, and there is no reason to separate them before a sale. We sort on our end. Attempting to split a pallet by metal is unpaid work that does not change your offer, and misidentifying a reel while sorting can actively cost you money.

What not to do with either metal

Do not strip. Stripping either metal drops the material to bare weight and removes every possibility of a resale premium. It is the single most expensive mistake in the surplus wire business, and it is usually done by someone trying to be helpful before a buyer arrives.
