Metal content sets the floor
Every reel has a floor price equal to its recoverable copper or aluminum value less processing. That floor moves with the commodity market, which is why a quote given three months ago is not a quote today. Understanding the floor matters because it tells you the worst case: no legitimate buyer should offer less than metal value for intact wire.
The floor is also the entire price a scrap yard will pay. Everything above it comes from resale demand, and resale demand is what a specialist buyer is actually bidding on.
Conductor size drives the premium
Large feeder sizes carry the strongest resale premium. A contractor short on 350 or 500 MCM is facing a long lead time and an expensive purchase order, so surplus in those sizes moves quickly. Small branch-circuit sizes are cheap and plentiful new, so the premium over metal is thinner.
This is why a single large-size reel can be worth more than a pallet of 12 AWG, and why it is worth mentioning your biggest sizes first when you call.

Insulation type narrows or widens the market
Common building wire types have the widest buyer pool and the most predictable pricing. Specialist constructions such as medium voltage shielded cable, armoured teck or instrumentation cable have smaller pools but higher unit values, because the material is costly new and hard to source quickly.
Obsolete or unusual insulation systems trend toward metal value regardless of condition, simply because nobody is installing them any more.
Continuous length is most of the value
A 1,000 foot reel is worth far more than the same footage in twelve pieces. Continuous length is what allows the next owner to actually use the wire on a pull, and it is the one variable sellers most often destroy themselves by cutting reels down to make them easier to handle.
If you have already cut material, do not worry about it; we still buy cut lengths. Just stop cutting anything else before you get a quote.
Reel and jacket condition
Surface dirt, fading and a weathered wooden reel are cosmetic and barely affect the number. What matters is water ingress into the conductor, cracked or brittle insulation, heat damage, and kinks severe enough to have deformed the conductor. Those move a reel from resale-grade toward scrap-grade.
If reels are outdoors, covering them is the single cheapest thing you can do to protect value while you get quotes.
Quantity and consolidation
Volume improves your position because freight is a fixed cost spread across the load. A full truckload from one site prices better per pound than a single reel from a hard-to-reach yard. If your material is split across several locations, mention that up front so it can be planned as one consolidated pickup.

Straight answers
Why does the price change month to month?
Because the metal floor tracks the commodity market. Resale demand is steadier, but the floor moves.
Does it help to clean the reels?
No. Cosmetic cleaning does not raise the offer. Covering outdoor reels to keep water out does protect value.
Is a small quantity worth selling?
Frequently yes, particularly in large feeder sizes. Small lots are usually combined into a consolidated pickup.
